As a Carnegie-classified High Research Activity institution, Idaho State University provides comprehensive research and scholarship support, from securing funding to navigating complex regulatory requirements. IRON provides important network access across ISU’s five campuses, where we encourage interdisciplinary collaboration to explore new ideas and develop solutions to complex real-world problems.
Two large research projects at GIS TREC at Idaho State University have benefitted from high speed internet provided by IRON. The NASA RECOVER post-wildfire decision support system is an automated platform developed at the GIS TREC providing current spatial data for wildfires across the western United States. Supporting post-disaster events requires not only current data, but also the reliability of ISU’s Research Data Center (RDC), and high-speed data transmission.
The FEMA Lidar project at ISU’s GIS TREC is developing digital surface models at 1-meter resolution for the entire state of Idaho. This ambitious project would not be feasible without the supercomputer capabilities provided by C3+3. Large lidar point cloud data is transferred from ISU’s RDC to C3+3 and processed on the Falcon supercomputer. Batch processes that would otherwise take an hour or more to complete on a standard Windows workstation are finished in seconds on Falcon.
