Position Summary
Idaho Regional Optical Network (IRON) is seeking an entry-level Network Technician to help support and maintain IRON’s regional fiber optic and IP network. The Network Technician will assist with day-to-day network operations, basic troubleshooting, equipment installation, and documentation. You’ll work alongside experienced network professionals who are eager to mentor, teach, and support you as you develop hands-on technical skills. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys problem-solving, working with cutting-edge infrastructure, and being an integral part of a team that works together.
What You’ll Do
Network Support & Operations
- Assist with monitoring network performance and responding to service alerts
- Perform basic troubleshooting of connectivity and hardware issues with guidance from senior staff
- Help install, configure, and maintain switches, routers, and fiber equipment
- Escalate complex issues while learning best practices from experienced engineers
Field & Infrastructure Support
- Support on-site installations and maintenance at member locations across Idaho
- Assist with fiber patching, labeling, and basic testing
- Help maintain clean, organized network closets and equipment racks
- Travel statewide for scheduled projects and troubleshooting (sometimes multiple days at a time)
Documentation & Reporting
- Keep network documentation, diagrams, and inventory up to date
- Record work performed and resolutions in a ticketing system
- Follow established procedures for maintenance and changes
- Collaboration & Customer Support
- Provide friendly, professional support to IRON members and partners
- Communicate clearly with teammates and supervisors
- Work collaboratively with internal staff, vendors, and contractors
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree, technical certificate, coursework in IT/networking/telecommunications, or equivalent hands-on experience
- Basic understanding of networking concepts (IP addressing, Ethernet, cabling)
- Strong desire to learn fiber optics, routing, switching, and network operations
- Ability to follow technical procedures and safety standards
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Idaho
- Ability to pass a background check, clean driving record, and drug test
- Must read, write, and speak English
- Willingness to travel multiple consecutive days with overnight stays
- Must have a dependable personal laptop and cell phone
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb stairs, work in tight spaces, sit for extended periods, hear alarms, and see clearly in varying light conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship, lab, or entry-level IT/networking experience
- Familiarity with fiber optic or structured cabling
- Exposure to switches, routers, or firewalls
- Entry-level certifications (CompTIA Network+, CCNA coursework, etc.)
