Boise State University connects to advanced research and education networks through the Idaho Regional Optical Network (IRON), enabling high-performance connectivity and collaboration with Internet2, the University of Idaho, Idaho State University, Idaho National Laboratory (INL), and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Through IRON, Boise State leverages the following specialized network connections and services:

  • 100 Gbps Science DMZ: For high-speed transfer of large-scale research data.
  • 100 and 10 Gbps Across-state Connections: Extends Boise State’s campus and Science DMZ networks to a remote, shared data center located at Idaho National Laboratory.
  • C3+3 Shared High Performance Computing (HPC): In collaboration with the University of Idaho and Idaho State University, Boise State co-manages a high-performance computing system housed at the INL Collaborative Computing Center (C3) in Idaho Falls. This system supports research computing needs across the three +3 institutions and is operated in partnership with INL.
  • 5 Gbps AWS Direct Connect: In partnership with IRON and Internet2, Boise State maintains a direct connection to AWS cloud infrastructure. This connection supports operational, academic, and research functions of the university.
  • 100 Gbps Internet2 Peering: Enables access to the national Internet2 network through a partnership with IRON and the Utah Education Network (UEN).
  • Internet2 Community Anchor Program (CAP): Boise State benefits from additional services and opportunities made available through IRON’s membership in Internet2’s CAP initiative.
  • Idaho Cyber Range: Boise State utilizes IRON for participation in the Idaho Cyber Range, a statewide multi-institutional cybersecurity education network.
